India is one of the world's great road trip destinations. Its diversity of terrain — mountains, coasts, deserts, forests and plains — makes every major highway journey a different experience. Here are 10 of the best intercity cab routes in India.

1. Mumbai to Goa — NH66 Konkan Coast

The classic. 580 km along the Arabian Sea coastline through the lush Konkan region. NH66 winds through coconut groves, fishing villages, and scenic estuaries. Best in winter (November–February). Most travellers prefer overnight travel.

2. Delhi to Agra — Yamuna Expressway

A smooth 200 km expressway drive to the Taj Mahal. The Yamuna Expressway is one of India's finest highways. Ideal for a day trip from Delhi. Leave early morning to reach Agra by 9am.

3. Bangalore to Coorg — Through Mysore

260 km through Karnataka's coffee and spice country. The road climbs through mist-covered Western Ghats into Coorg's coffee estates. Best in September–March. Mysore makes an excellent halfway stop.

4. Chennai to Pondicherry — East Coast Road

160 km along the Bay of Bengal on the East Coast Road (ECR). One of India's most beautiful coastal drives — the road runs right next to the sea for long stretches. 3 hours, zero traffic stress.

5. Jaipur to Udaipur — Through Ajmer and Pushkar

390 km through the heart of Rajasthan. The route passes Ajmer (Dargah Sharif) and the holy lake city of Pushkar before descending into Udaipur's lake district. Desert landscapes, ancient temples, camel sightings.

6. Delhi to Shimla — Through Chandigarh

360 km from Delhi into the Himalayas. The last 90 km from Kalka climbs through dramatic pine forests and Himalayan valleys. Shimla is India's most popular hill station — book early morning to arrive by afternoon.

7. Hyderabad to Tirupati — Through Kurnool

550 km from Hyderabad to one of the world's most visited temples. The Tirumala hills are sacred to millions of Hindu devotees. Andhra Pradesh's highways are excellent. Overnight cab is the most practical.

8. Kolkata to Darjeeling — Through Siliguri

620 km from Kolkata to the tea gardens of Darjeeling. The plains give way to spectacular mountain views as you approach Siliguri, then the road climbs steeply into the Himalayas. 2-day journey with overnight halt at Siliguri.

9. Pune to Bangalore — NH48

833 km on one of India's best national highways. NH48 passes through Belgaum, Hubli and Dharwad in Karnataka. Overnight journey in a comfortable SUV is the standard approach. Door-to-door convenience over flights.

10. Amritsar to Manali — Through Pathankot

370 km from the Golden Temple to the Himalayan adventure capital. The route passes through Pathankot and the Beas River valley before climbing into the high Himalayas. Best May–October.
